If needed, these specialists may serve as expert witnesses in support of the patient’s case. While no one wants to be the subject of a malpractice case, when the quality of care deviates significantly from established “best clinical practices,” African American patients may need the perspective of a Black physician.
With the goal of preserving the number of African American physicians, NIAAH may also serve as an advocate in their defense.
