The National Institute for African American Health (“NIAAH,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the NIAAH Community Site hosted on the Wix platform (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information about visitors, subscribers, and program participants (“you”).

By using the Site or submitting information to us, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

Information we collect

We may collect the following types of information when you use the Site, join the NIAAH Scholars community, subscribe to content, or contact us:

  • Contact information: name, email address, and any information you choose to include when you submit a contact form or register for programs.

  • Account and profile information: information associated with your NIAAH program portal login (such as display name and participation in groups) to the extent enabled by Wix community features.

  • Usage and device information: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, pages visited, and actions taken on the Site, collected via Wix and its analytics or cookies.

  • Communications: records of your communications with us, including emails and messages sent through the Site.

We do not intend to collect sensitive medical records or personally identifiable health information through this Site; any educational or health-related content is general in nature and not individualized medical advice.

How we use information

We may use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the Site and its features, including the blog and NIAAH Scholars community.

  • To respond to your inquiries, provide requested information, and communicate about NIAAH programs, news, and events.

  • To manage registrations, logins, and participation in NIAAH programs, mentorship, or training.

  • To analyze Site usage and performance, improve user experience, and develop new content and services.

  • To comply with legal obligations, enforce our Terms & Conditions, and protect the rights, safety, and security of NIAAH, our users, and the public.

Legal bases (if applicable)

Where required by applicable law (such as in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom), we process personal information on one or more of the following legal bases:

  • Your consent (for example, to send you certain communications or when required for cookies/analytics).

  • Performance of a contract (for example, operating a program you have joined).

  • Our legitimate interests (for example, improving our Site and services, ensuring security, and advancing our mission to improve African American health).

  • Compliance with legal obligations.

Cookies and similar technologies

Our Site is hosted on the Wix platform, which may use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to enable core functionality, provide security, remember preferences, and analyze traffic.

You can usually configure your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when cookies are being placed; however, some features of the Site may not function properly if cookies are disabled. Where required by law, we will obtain your consent for non-essential cookies.

How we share information

We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service providers: with Wix and other vendors that provide hosting, analytics, email, or other services on our behalf, subject to contractual obligations to protect your information.

  • Program partners: with trusted educational or healthcare partners involved in delivering specific NIAAH programs or events, only as necessary for those activities.

  • Legal and safety: when we believe disclosure is necessary to comply with law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of NIAAH, our users, or the public.

  • Business transfers: in connection with a reorganization or similar event involving NIAAH, subject to appropriate safeguards where required by law.

We do not sell your personal information.

International transfers

Because our Site is hosted by Wix and may use services located in other countries, your information may be processed outside of your state, province, or country, where data protection laws may differ. Where required, we take appropriate measures to protect your information in connection with such transfers.

Data retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to meet legal, accounting, or reporting requirements, and to the extent allowed by applicable law.

When no longer needed, information will be deleted, anonymized, or securely stored and isolated from further use.

Your rights and choices

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, which may include:

  • Accessing and obtaining a copy of your personal information.

  • Requesting correction or update of inaccurate or incomplete information.

  • Requesting deletion of your personal information, subject to applicable exceptions.

  • Objecting to or restricting certain processing, including for direct marketing.

  • Withdrawing consent where processing is based on your consent.

To exercise these rights, please contact us at info@niaah.org or by mail at the address below. We may need to verify your identity before responding to your request, and some rights may be limited by applicable law.

If you receive email communications from us, you may opt out at any time by using the unsubscribe link in those emails or by contacting us directly.

Children’s privacy

The Site is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or other age defined by applicable law), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child without appropriate consent, we will delete it as required by law.

Security

We use reasonable physical, technical, and organizational measures to protect personal information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Third-party links and services

The Site may contain links to third-party websites, social media pages (such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram), or services that are not controlled by NIAAH. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third-party sites or services, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any information to them.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and, where required by law, we will provide additional notice or seek your consent to material changes.
